You know the saying, "you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar" -- humor is the honey. Then you realize you're stuck on flypaper and you think: Oooh, this is serious.  Some themes that pop up: the ephemeral nature of life, decay, illness, death, the futility of desire, oblique social commentary and the like.
