DM Diary

In 1996 I developed a rare, sometimes fatal disease, dermatomyositis (DM), in which my immune system attacked my skin and destroyed muscles in my arms and legs. I started on 80mg of prednisone per day to suppress my immune system. It took 5 years to taper off the prednisone and go into remission: 5 years that utterly changed my life. In 2002 I made a photo series documenting my experience, but it seemed to be missing something. Eventually I combined it with fabric collage, embroidery, and bead embroidery to create a 13 panel wall quilt series. This is a selection of the work.
